Line 6 LowDown Studio 110 Combo Bass Amp

Line 6 LowDown Studio 110 Combo Bass Amp

All the essential bass tones in one package.

One of the first bass amps from Line 6, the Low Down Studio 110 Combo Bass Amp delivers an incredible array of dialed-in, stage-perfected bass tones. While most bass combos focus on volume and clean tone, LowDown offers 5 must-have effects and five killer bass amp models that cover everything from funk to classic rock and beyond. Plus, the oversized, high-speed power amp has incredible articulation and bottom end punch that's ideal for live or studio work.

The LowDown delivers five carefully crafted amp models that can take you from modern punch to a thunderous, full-on assault! Each model automatically dials up a great sound that you can change to your liking and save into a preset using the channel memories on the front panel.

Clean Inspired by the Eden Traveler, this model is all about clean, funk and fusion bass tone. It'll give you all the warm lows and punchy highs you need.

R & B Inspired by a 1968 B-15 Flip Top, this model is a tribute to those late 60's and early 70's clean fat bass tones. It is the kind of tone you here on most Motown recordings, as played by a pioneering young James Jamerson.

Rock - This model is inspired by the '74 Ampeg SVT. This workhorse has appeared on innumerable recordings and arena stages worldwide. And now all the tone of the 300-pound behemoth 8X10 and head is available in your combo!

Brit Based on a '68 Marshall Super Bass, this model delivers the kind of overdriven bass sound brought to us by late 60's British rock pioneers like Cream and The Who.

Grind As the name would suggest, this is for modern rock lovers, Alice in Chains to Mudvayne and Rage Against The Machine. Based on a distorted SansAmp PSA-1 into an SVT in addition to a direct clean bass signal mixed in, this model gives you that angry, clear and punchy aggression that takes your sound to DEFCON 1.

Synth Sitting at the back of the model knob is this secret weapon that turns LowDown into a '70s classic bass synth. From funk to modern rock, this synth model delivers incredible tones and tracks every dynamic move you make with ease!

LowDown features a critical set of effects that no bass player should be without! You get a full time, vintage studio compressor model, and the Smart FX knob dials up three different heavyweight effects that are custom tailored for bass.

Envelope filter Based on* a Q-Tron, this is the baddest envelope filter on the planet. This effect can be heard on tons of major funk and rock tunes.

Octaver Based on* the EBS OctaBass, this effect produces a single note one octave below the pitch of the played note, adding a powerful new vibe to your sound.

Chorus Based on* the much loved TC Electronics Chorus. This is the most transparent, smooth and expressive chorus for bass ever built. Using it does not reduce your low end and it's especially beautiful on fretless bass.

Amazing Tone On Stage and In The Studio! The XLR Direct Output was designed for recording or sending your sound to a house sound system when you're playing live. This output utilizes exclusive Line 6 A.I.R. processing which has made products like POD the undisputed standard for direct recording. Epiphone So Cal 50 and Blues Custom 30

Epiphone So Cal 50 and Blues Custom 30
No-compromise high-end tube tone you can afford
By Roland Achebe
Epiphone So Cal 50 and Blues Custom 30

You may not think of them as the go-to brand for all-tube amps built for professionals, but in one fell swoop Epiphone has landed with both feet in the high-end guitar amp market and created a niche all their own with prices that are far lower than anything else in this quality range. The So Cal 50 Head with its own So Cal 412SL Cab and the Blues Custom 30 Combo are designed and engineered in the USA by Gibson. Sophisticated feature sets, super-rugged construction, and gorgeous design add up to a pair of amplifiers that stand toe-to-toe with the best production models available from any maker.
Head of the class

The So Cal 50 Head impressed me even before I plugged it in. It’s got a very vintage visual vibe with black vinyl covering and elegant white faceplate. A large, wide-open tube chamber is covered by black grilles on front and back. The hefty pair of EL34 power tubes and three serious-looking transformers together with the small army of 12AX7s give the visual impression of industrial power.

Any reservations I might have had about having the Epiphone name on my backline evaporated when I hooked this baby up to the So Cal 412SL Cab and plugged in a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. When I turned it up loud, it quickly got way too loud. Hence, most of my testing happened at about 3 on the volume dial. If, like me, you’re a fan of that rich power tube distortion and, also like me, most of your gigs are in clubs rather than auditoriums, you’ll love the So Cal’s 25W/50W (Class AB) power switch. In the 25W mode it generates a little bit more sag and lets you really heat up the tubes without blowing the windows out.

On both power settings this amp absolutely dazzles. The DC filaments on the 12AX7 preamp tubes make it hum-free when played clean. On the clean channel in a jazzy mood, the So Cal 50 delivers incredibly smooth, warm tone with a totally solid tonal center in the low mids—just where I like it. The solid-state rectifier with fixed bias keeps the low end tight and well-defined with plenty of headroom while the tube circuitry keeps it open and free-breathing.
Hot to trot

Fired up for nuclear burn, channel two on the So Cal 50 totally rocks. That same solid low-mid tonal core keeps a hard-driving definition and I had no trouble dialing in plenty of high-end sparkle. Most of all, this amp is mind-blowing for its flexibility. Key in that regard is the independent vs. interactive tone control switch. The interactive mode—similar to EQ circuits found on Fenders and Marshalls—automatically cuts the bass when you boost the treble, and vice versa. The independent mode—similar to EQ circuits found on Orange and Ampeg amps—allows you to boost or cut either treble or bass without affecting the other. The middle tone control is independent in both modes.
Epiphone Blues Custom 30 Watt 2x12" Combo Amp, So Cal 50 Watt Amp Head, And So Cal 412 4x12" Speaker Cabinet
Epiphone Blues Custom 30 Watt 2x12" Combo Amp, So Cal 50 Watt Amp Head, And So Cal 412 4x12" Speaker Cabinet

This gives you quick access to a world of tonal options. The interactive mode allows fast, organic adjustments on the fly while the independent mode lets you really scoop the mids, which is great for thrash and nu metal. The Eminence Lady Luck speakers in the So Cal 412SL cab were designed with Epiphone’s intimate involvement and the result is a perfect match for this amp—full bodied tone with tight bass and crisp highs that aren’t brittle or piercing.
All in the name

The tube rectifier and cathode bias on the Blues Custom 30 give it a little more of the classic "sag" you seek from a vintage blues amp and produce a silky, sweet response. But, as with the So Cal 50, there’s no hiding in the distortion. Crystal-clear definition comes hand-in-hand with serious in-your-face punch. Flip a switch on the back and the Blues Custom 30 becomes a 15-watt Class A recording amp. In this mode, it’s a snarling little bulldog that competes with some of the finest boutique amps I’ve heard.

Also like the So Cal 50, this one features a tube-powered reverb that’s very useful and produces a lot of different sounds depending on the EQ setup. An extra mid tone knob on the hot channel works in conjunction with the 3-band EQ on the clean side and really adds a lot of body. The Blues Custom 30 also sports the independent/interactive tone control switch and the Lady Luck speakers. Both amps feature 11-ply plywood construction and 16-gauge spot-welded chassis, so they should be able to withstand daily roadwork with no sweat. The Blues Custom 30’s look is sublimely vintage with chicken-head knobs, creme piping, and a unique diagonal brace across the front grille.

In short, these babies got it all going on. If I were a high-end amp manufacturer, I’d be very threatened by the So Cal 50 and Blues Custom 30 amps. With them, Epiphone has proven it’s possible to provide truly world-class tube tone without breaking the bank.

Optimizing Guitar Playability

Optimizing Guitar Playability

Playing guitar is a highly personal experience. Every player has different needs, and that is why setting up your new guitar becomes a matter of personal taste. We generally recommend taking your new ax to a qualified luthier for a proper set-up. Although most guitars play great right out of the box, some need just a little bit of tweaking to make them really perform.

Ultimately what you are trying to achieve is:
1. Good Action (the least possible distance between the string and the frets without buzzing or rattling of the string against the fret)
2. Balanced, even, electrical output on each string in all pickup positions
3. Smooth, accurate tuning action and the ability to stay in tune after bending a note or using the tremolo
4. Last, but certainly not least, killer tone!

Keep in mind though, that some of these goals are mutually incompatible. For instance, really light strings and really low action don't allow a guitar to sustain or sound fat, compared to the same guitar with heavier strings and higher action. Finding that optimal playing "zone" is sometimes a matter of compromise. Knowing that, here are some tips that can help you achieve guitar nirvana.

Strings:

Experimenting with different brands is great, but once you a find a brand and gauge you like, stick with it. Your guitar will thank you for it. Constantly changing string gauges usually involves adjustments to the neck, which can be a time-consuming pain, and wouldn't you rather be playing?

Wiping your strings down with a clean cloth after playing can extend their life and your wallet.

If you are breaking a lot of strings at the bridge, the most likely cause is burrs that develop on the string saddles. A light sanding and polishing is all that is needed to smooth these out. Take your guitar to a luthier if you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself.

Tuners:

I can't say enough good things about Sperzel locking tuners. They are worth their weight in gold. While I wouldn't recommend installing them on a vintage Strat; for a new, out-of-the-box guitar they work wonders. They offer rock solid tuning, and actually improve sustain by adding more mass to the headstock.

If you're going with stock tuners, make sure all screws are snug but not too tight. If it still feels sloppy or will not hold the pitch, replace them.

Pickups:

There is a phenomenon regarding guitar pickups called "magnetic interference." This is where the magnetic field generated by the pickup actually impedes the vibration of the string, causing a dull, lifeless sound. Generally you want to get the pickups close enough for good output, but not so close as to choke the string. Fender recommends around 5/64" clearance from the top of the pole piece to the bottom of the string fretted at the last fret. You can check this with automotive type feeler gauges.

Action:

This is going to be a general recommendation which may not apply to everyone's playing style. First, check the relief, or amount of bow in the neck. Put a capo at the first fret then hold down the 6th string at the last fret. Using a feeler gauge, measure the gap between the string and the 8th fret. Factory spec for Strats and clones should be around .010" Next, check the bridge saddle height.

Factory spec at the 17th fret should be 5/65" for strings 1-4, 3/32" for strings 5-6. Another really cool trick is to adjust the saddles to follow the radius of the fingerboard, meaning the middle string saddles are higher than the outside saddles. This allows the strings to follow the natural curve of the fingerboard and makes for a smoother playing neck.

These are just a few recommendations for getting the most out of your guitar. Again, if you don't feel comfortable with doing this yourself, take it to your favorite luthier. Watch and learn, and pretty soon you'll be doing it yourself. Also, if you're a do-it-yourself kind of person, pick up a copy of the "Guitar Player's Repair Guide." It too is worth its weight in gold.

Martin DSR Solid Top Dreadnought Rosewood/Spruce Acoustic Guitar Natural

A sweet signature acoustic inspired by Sugar Ray.

Funky rhythms, sweet harmonies, irresistible guitar hooks and a sense of fun have made Sugar Ray a musical powerhouse. In a pop genre all its own, the group has become a popular and critical success in less than a decade by demonstrating creative flair few contemporaries can match.

Martin guitars play a big role in Sugar Ray's sound, providing acoustic accents to hits like "Every Morning" and "When It's Over." Now Martin has created a guitar that captures Sugar Ray's fresh, unique style: the DSR Sugar Ray Signature Edition.

Based loosely on Martin's popular D-17 all-mahogany Dreadnought, the DSR Sugar Ray Signature Edition features a range of unique appointments. From distinctly rounded body edges and black ebony trappings to ripple pearl inlays and tinted polished gloss finish, this guitar is as appealing as the group that inspired it.

Sugar Ray became a group in 1992, when Southern California high school buddies Mark McGrath and Rodney Sheppard joined former bandmate Stan Frazier and friend-of-Stan's-sister Murphy Karges to play hardcore Orange County funk. The foursome moved into a house together, played local dives, and hooked up with Craig "DJ Homicide" Bullock, the fifth band member. In 1995, the group released its first album called "Lemonade and Brownies" and two years later released of the reggae-tinged single "Fly." The record went to #1 on the charts, the video went #1 on MTV, the album that followed, "Floored," went Double Platinum, and Sugar Ray went on the road, playing concerts and television appearances across the United States and Europe for a year before heading back to the studio.

The follow-up album, "14:59" (a sly reference to the duration of fame) showed "Fly" was only the starting point for Sugar Ray music. Released in 1999, the album yielded two hit singles, "Every Morning" and "Someday," included some burning rock tracks and went Triple Platinum. Released after yet another tour, Sugar Ray's self-titled fourth album, a seamless blend of pop, rock, ska and other influences, was considered by many to be the best recording of 2001.

The Martin DSR acoustic guitar offers standout looks and sound. Crafted from solid genuine mahogany for clear, bright tone, the instrument's unique rounded body edges confer distinctive appearance and playing comfort. A-Frame bracing under the top assures hallmark Martin resonance. In contrast to the unbound body, the rosette shines with inlays: a center inlay of black-bordered ripple pearl, flanked by inner and outer black/white/black inlays. Like the body, the modified low oval 1-11/16" (at the nut) neck is solid genuine mahogany. Translucent red toner enhances the color of the polished gloss finished body and headstock, as well as the satin lacquer finished neck.

Ripple pearl inlays in the black ebony headstock overlay and fingerboard honor Austin the Bulldog, Sugar Ray's mascot and a familiar presence in the group's United States videos. The polished headstock overlay features Martin's gold foil logo above a ripple pearl image of Austin's head. Paw print position markers inlaid in ripple pearl - one at the 5th fret, two at the 7th, and one at the 9th - lead to a dog bone inlay at the 12th fret and the Sugar Ray logo between the 18th and 20th frets. Schaller tuners with large ebony buttons, a polished and beveled black pickguard, a black ebony bridge, black bridge pins and end pin with pearl dots and genuine bone nut and compensated saddle round out the appointments.

Each Martin DSR Sugar Ray Signature Edition guitar bears an interior label personally signed by Martin Chairman and CEO C. F. Martin IV and the members of Sugar Ray, and is numbered in sequence with the edition total. Each guitar is delivered in a #345 Martin hardshell case.
