Fender American Standard HSS Stratocaster

Fender American Standard HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar Black Maple Fretboard

Fender American Standard HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar Black Maple Fretboard

Incredible tonal versatility on a distinctly American axe.

The Fender American Standard Series Stratocaster HSS is a perfect electric guitar for players who like big, fat humbucker tone. Redesigned with improvements that include the modern C-shaped maple neck with glossed neck front and satin polyurethane finish on back for smooth playability. Bent steel Fender saddles with classic look and great tone. String spacing narrowed for modern playability, saddle height screws re-sized to reduce rough feel, and string slot on saddle elongated to reduce string friction or breakage. Custom staggered tuning machines eliminate the need for one of the string trees. Staggered pole pieces in the pickups provide balanced output across all strings, and specifically improves the G-string's tone. Two-point trem, rosewood or maple fretboard, and genuine Fender American craftsmanship add up to a Fat Strat style guitar that is a dream come true.

The return of the American Standard Series Strat continues Fender's tradition of commitment to the people who play Fender instruments out there in the real world. Today s American Standard Stratocaster guitars are worthy heirs of their revered ancestors mindful of player needs and taking full advantage of modern advances, yet remaining completely true to the elements and spirit that made these instruments legendary in the first place. Improvements include redesigned bridges, neck and body finishes, and a Fender-exclusive high-tech molded case. Still there are the beloved hand-rolled fingerboard edges, alnico V pickups and staggered tuning machines for tone and stability guaranteed to last a lifetime (with its limited lifetime warranty)! So make history with the redesigned American Standard!

Redesigned American Standard Strat® Bridge
Gives sought-after tone with modern smooth trem travel. Block retains the mass and tone of a vintage bridge block, but is chamfered for access to deeper dives. Saddles have the classic look and tone, but with modern improvements (spacing, slot elongation, height screw length).

Bridge Component Specifics
American Standard saddles- The original vintage-style Fender bent steel adjustable saddle is one of the components that give vintage Fenders their tonal mojo . Fender conducted tone comparison tests, and fell in love with them all over again. They have a wider tonal range and more character many other saddles. Then Fender improved them; narrowing the spacing to afford more room (and complement the bigger frets and rolled edges), and also elongated the string slot to reduce friction and string breakage, while improving the string break angle over the primary contact point.

Tone-fusion block- A typical cast bridge block is impregnated with a resin to eliminate voids in the material and to bond it together this steel block is infused with copper, which makes the block 100% homogeneous metal. The result is a more musical, higher mass bridge that has more of that machined-block sound. Fender was also able to keep the same American Series profile for increased tremolo travel.

Fender American Standard HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar Features:

* Modern C-shaped maple neck with rich, deep neck tint, glossed neck front with satin back
* Staggered Tuning Machines
* 2 single-coil pickups in the front and middle
* Humbucker at the bridge
* Delta-tone™ no-load circuit
* Bent steel Fender saddles
* Copper Infused Cast Strat® Bridge Block (steel with copper- 100% metal) for Increased Mass and Improved Tone
* Thinner undercoat for improved body resonance
* American 2-point trem
* Rosewood or maple fretboard

Fender American Standard HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar Includes:

* hardshell case

A guitar that gives you every tonal option you could hope for, and then some. Make it yours today.

Fender Redesigns the American Standard Strat, Tele, Jazz and Precision Bass

Fender Redesigns the American Standard Strat, Tele, Jazz and Precision Bass

Today Fender makes Strats, Teles, Jazz and Precision Basses in just about any configuration you can imagine, whether it’s identical to one played by your favorite artist or an exact duplicate of a vintage model from the Fifties. This vast selection can be pretty overwhelming, but players looking for instruments that represent the essence of Fender turn to the American Standard series when they want a guitar or bass that combines the timeless tones of the classic versions with modern refinements that offer improved playability and performance.

"The American Standard series is Fender’s center of gravity," says Fender Electric Guitar Marketing Manager Justin Norvell. "Before the market fragmented to 50 types of heavy metal, 80 types of funk and 130 satellite radio stations and before there was a vintage market, people used to play a regular Strat or Tele. When Hendrix set a guitar on fire at Monterey, the next day he just went out and got a new Strat. It wasn’t like he specified a ’57 or a ’65. The American Standard line is a modern interpretation of that. It’s timeless as well as being timely."

Just as Leo Fender constantly upgraded and improved the Stratocaster, Telecaster, Jazz Bass and Precision Bass design every few years, the American Standard series offers new refinements that satisfy the constantly evolving needs of modern players while remaining true to the spirit of the original models. This year the entire American Standard series has undergone several significant changes.

"We overhauled the finish process for the new American Standard instruments," says Fender Bass Products Marketing Manager Jay Piccirillo. "The undercoat is thinner, which allows the bodies to breathe and resonate more. We’ve also eliminated the buildup of finish at the neck pocket so that union between the neck and the body is truer."

"We wanted to keep a smooth, durable satin finish on the necks," adds Norvell. "Over time the tint of our satin finishes kept getting lighter until the necks almost looked white. We kept the satin finish on the back of the neck, but now it’s tinted so it looks warmer and richer. The fingerboard is buffed so it has a nice, shiny luster that looks really beautiful when light hits it."

The bridge design for the American Standard Stratocaster, Telecaster, Jazz Bass and Precision Bass also received several important upgrades. The Strat and Tele models now feature bent-steel Fender-style saddles with completely new tooling. "The bent-steel saddle is a big part of great Strat tone," says Norvell. "It creates that swirl you hear when you play trills. The spacing is narrower because we have a flatter radius and bigger frets. The slot where the string comes through the saddle is longer so you’re not going to break your high E and B strings as easily. The height adjustment screws don’t stick up into your palm any more, and they’re made of softer metal with finer threads. The old saddles have a more compressed sound that works well with noiseless pickups, but the new saddles with the Alnico V pickups give you a wider tonal range."

The steel bridge block on the new American Standard Strat is filled with copper instead of resin. "It’s now 100 percent metal," says Norvell. "The block is smaller, so you get more travel from the tremolo bar but you still have the mass of a full-size bridge block so you get more tone and sustain. On the Tele we went to a brass bridge plate with a Fender logo stamped into it like the tailpiece on a Mustang, Jaguar or Jazzmaster. It’s a marriage of a brass bridge plate with bent-steel saddles. A ’52 Tele had brass saddles on a steel plate, so it’s still that same tonal marriage, just reversed. It has that nice bright, wide Tele sound with plenty of clarity."

The J- and P-basses have a newly designed High Mass Vintage Bridge, which consists of a thick steel plate with a brass backstop and brass barrel saddles. "The High Mass Vintage Bridge has the enhanced sustain and punch that a lot of modern players are looking for," says Piccirillo. "But when you look at the bridge it looks like it belongs on the bass. We needed a certain look and a certain sound with a certain level of performance. We’re very proud of what we’ve come up with."

The basses also include new tuners that Fender designed with Hipshot. "We maintained the look and vibe of Fender bass tuners, but we made then 30 percent lighter without losing any of the strength," says Piccirillo. "That keeps the headstock from being too heavy and results in much better balance."

All American Standard series instruments now come with newly designed lightweight, high-impact, molded plastic SKB cases. Glass-reinforced nylon trigger latches provide exceptional security and durability, while TSA-approved locks make it easy to travel with your instrument under today’s strict security requirements. The cases are designed to lock together with similar cases, allowing you to securely stack as many cases as you like.

Fender’s American Standard series instruments are still made from the highest quality materials Fender can obtain. The bodies are crafted from alder grown in the Pacific Northwest, while the necks are made from Eastern hard rock maple harvested in the Northeastern US and Southeastern Canada. Premium grade Indian rosewood is used for the versions with rosewood fingerboards.

"We’re using the same traditional tone woods that Fender has used for years and years," says Steve Grom, Fender’s Vice President of Quality Assurance. "With the American Standard series it’s important to stay true to Fender tradition and remain historically correct to a lot of the vintage instruments."

In 2000, Fender returned to the use of Alnico V magnets for the American Standard series pickups. "The pickups feature a proprietary design, and they’re made in Fender’s factory in California," says Grom. "We have a whole department of people here that wind pickups all day long. We still use the old enamel-coated wire. The only major difference between these pickups and vintage ones is that we now use an injection molded plastic bobbin as opposed to the old fiber bobbin."

Thanks to Fender’s commitment to the American Standard series, they’ve managed to maintain competitive prices for a high-quality, domestically produced instrument. "We make a huge volume of these guitars, so we get excellent prices on raw materials and components," explains Grom. "We have a very sophisticated factory with amazing automated machines that do a lot of the routing, but a lot of handwork still goes into the production of these instruments as well. All of the final wood sanding, buffing and painting is done by hand one unit at a time."

Like its predecessors, the newly revised American Standard series instruments are certain to please a wide variety of musicians no matter what style of music they play. You’re just as likely to see an American Standard Strat or Tele in the hands of a country, jazz or blues musician as you are to see one played by a punk, metal, alternative or rock guitarist. Players like Tom Morello, Jeff Beck and Ed O’Brien of Radiohead have used American Standard guitars as the foundation for their highly individual playing styles.

"Jeff Beck has created unique music that can only be played on a American Standard Strat," says Grom. "You have to have that instrument in order to recreate the music that he plays. You can’t do that on a Telecaster or Les Paul. You’d have a hard time playing it even on a vintage Strat because the tremolo is not the same. Jeff Beck has created music based on the American Standard Strat just like a composer would create music for the violin or oboe." Fender American Standard guitars and basses are great choices for any players who want to develop their own distinctive voices and personalities as well. "The American Standard Strat, Tele, P-bass and J-bass are the four corners of tone," says Norvell. "These are the instruments to buy when you want to sound like you. You could put four musicians in a room that would have nothing in common other than they all play an American Standard Strat. Every time music has gone through a seismic shift Fender was there. Fender guitars and basses have been at the front from the first days of rock and roll through surf, pop, psychedelic, punk, new wave, grunge, alternative and beyond. But we’re just setting up the tee—it’s up to the players themselves to knock it out of the park and make history with the instruments we build."

"American Standard instruments are the instruments that everybody loves but they’re modernized and refined in subtle ways," adds Piccirillo.

"We didn’t change things for the sake of changing them," says Norvell. "We did research, testing and material comparisons that consumers can’t afford to do. It’s not cheap to make a dozen new bridge block designs for testing. We did all that research for you."

"At the end of the day, it’s all about staying true to the spirit of Leo Fender," says Grom. "We take that very seriously. Every day we walk into the factory and say, ‘Thank you, Leo.’ That’s why we put so much effort into the American Standard series. We wanted to really get things right to satisfy the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s musicians."

Peavey Announces PXD Series, Calls Them "Extreme Electric Guitars"
Peavey introduces the PXD Series, a breed of extreme electric guitars aimed at modern metal players. With supercharged active pickups coupled directly to slabs of tone-sustaining mahogany, the Peavey PXD Series complements the Peavey 6505 Series guitar amplifiers. The series launches with four distinct models: the Tomb, Twenty-Three, Tragic, and Void, with a range of feature options including Kahler tremolos, adjustable bridges with a string-through design, and wicked designs that ship with Coffin Case cases or gig bags. The initial launch of PXD guitars will offer satin black finish with aged aluminum pickguard, inlay, and truss rod cover, with additional options to follow. The guitars feature Peavey VFL active pickups, or EMG pickups with the EMG-AB Afterburner tone circuit, which boosts input gain up to 20 dB for high levels of saturation. The MSRP for the guitars ranges from $399.99 to $899.99.

Soft Launch for PRS Acoustic Guitars

Soft Launch for PRS Acoustic Guitars
Those fortunate (or sharp-elbowed) enough to get into the always tumultuous PRS Guitars exhibit at NAMM had an unexpected treat in addition to the 12 new electric models the guitar maker released: three beautiful acoustic guitars – a first in the company's history.

"We haven't really announced them yet, but thought we'd bring a few and just set them up in the booth," said PRS' Rebecca Eaddy. "It's sort of a 'soft release,' and people have been pleasantly shocked – even expressing disbelief."

Currently, the acoustic guitars are part of the Paul Reed Smith Private Stock line. Longtime PRS luthier Joe Knaggs built the guitars on display, which are dubbed "Chesapeake" models (the PRS factory is near Chesapeake Bay.) "Paul [Reed Smith] also has acoustics he personally has been working on, but we didn’t display them and they are not yet available to the public," Eaddy added.

"For the moment, we are offering acoustics through Private Stock only, but we are in the midst of developing an acoustic line in regular production," notes Peter Wolf, director of sales and marketing. "There are no concrete timelines or details yet. In the past, most new PRS models have been introduced through Private Stock first."

Carl Martin Classic Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal

Housed in die cast metal bathed in retro purple, the Classic Chorus Pedal by Carl Martin offers level controls for Speed, Depth and effect Level. Hit the Vibrato switch and the Rate knob blends between Chorus and Vibrato.

Round, warm, vintage chorus and vibrato swirl out from this pedal thanks to the absence of compander circuitry. Companding does smooth things out, but it can also cause the loss of fullness and responsiveness you find in older effect pedals. Carl Martin believes you and your audience can handle the big round sound this little baby puts out.

These G12 replacement speakers drive the EVH 5150III amplifier to deliver ultimate Van Halen tone. They're the result of Edward Van Halen and Fender joining forces in an incredible collaboration.Throughout his career, Eddie Van Halen has sought out original Celestion 20-watt Greenback speakers to load into his recording and performing rigs. So, when designing the EVH 5150III it was to Celestion that EVH and Fender turned in search of that vintage Greenback sound.Celestion's Heritage Series G12 M speakers are a faithful reproduction of the original 1960s 20-watt Greenback and for EVH they provide the ideal solution. However—in order to give this speaker a look that is unmistakably EVH—a specially designed label, featuring the Van Halen logo and unique EVH striped design, along with a black-painted can that evokes the memory of the rare and much sought after Celestion "Blackback" speakers, were added.

Carl Martin 2Wah Guitar Effects Pedal

Carl Martin 2Wah Guitar Effects Pedal

Carl Martin 2Wah Guitar Effects Pedal

Carl Martin 2Wah Guitar Effects Pedal

This familiar looking retro-styled foot pedal has an all-metal casing with a non-slip foot pad. The 2Wah pedal can be powered by 9v battery, but Carl Martin always recommends using a regulated power supply (like the Carl Martin Big John Power Supply) for maximum headroom and effect. Input is on the right and output on the left (remember your Wah should be the first pedal in your chain), and the standard effect on-off by stepping on the front of the rocker to engage the true bypass on-off switch.There are two 3-way mode switches on the front of the 2Wah pedal marked Low (red LED) and High (green LED). These are connected to an on-off switch at the back of the pedal (step on back of rocker to engage this switch). The three low and the three high settings are recreations of six of the most popular vintage wah sounds since the beginning of wah. The Attack knob allows you to fine-tune exactly how you want the rocker to modulate your guitar signal. Six different wah sounds, from Hendrix to Trower to Earth Wind & Fire and beyond, all in one guitar pedal. So why didn t they call it the 6 Wah? Well, you would have to ask Carl The function of a wah pedal is to manually (by way of a rocker control) modulate your guitar's signal. Plug your guitar into the wah (input right) and then to other pedals, or your amp (output left). By stepping on the front of the rocker, you engage the on-off switch, and by stepping on the back of the rocker you engage the Mode switch. Select position 1, 2, or 3 in both High and Low Modes, engage the effect and fine-tune the attack of this effect by adjusting the Attack knob (also on the front of the 2 Wah). The green (Low) and red (High) LED s indicate which Mode you are in, with Low being typically for lead work, and High being used more often for rhythm work.

PAUL REED SMITH GUITARS

PAUL REED SMITH GUITARS
Paul Reed Smith Guitars, Ltd. introduces 12 guitar models at the 2008 NAMM Show:

The DGT - David Grissom Trem is the result of more than 20 years of collaboration between Paul Reed Smith and David Grissom. The DGT was inspired by Grissom’s wish to take all of the best elements of his PRS guitars and combine them with an extra volume control, a nitro topcoat, vintage colors, his favorite neck shape, large frets, and .011 gauge strings. Grissom’s signature model features special pickups, special wiring, a special neck shape (smaller than a wide-fat neck), bigger frets, and heavy-gauge strings that complement rhythm and solo tones.

The PRS Mira is a 24-fret guitar that features a 25” scale length, 10” radius, regular or wide-thin neck shape, locking tuning pegs, PRS Stoptail, abalone moon inlays, optional bird inlays, East Indian rosewood fingerboard, a solid mahogany body and neck, Mira Treble and Bass pickups, volume, tone, three-way blade switch, and mini toggle coil tap. The Mira model is offered in Vintage Cherry, Orange, Vintage Mahogany, Black, Wild Mint, Lilac, Seafoam Green, Powder Blue, and Sandstorm.

Korina has come to be known as a rare and legendary tone wood amongst manufacturers and players over the years, and PRS now adds the McCarty Korina to their model line. The new model features an all- korina body with a korina neck and headstock, an East Indian rosewood fretboard, and is offered in several colors.

The McCarty II is the successor to the McCarty, the PRS guitar model named for industry icon Ted McCarty. The instrument comes standard with a carved figured maple top with a mahogany back body, 25" scale length, 22-fret mahogany wide-fat neck with rosewood fretboard, moon inlays (new birds optional), PRS Stoptail, vintage-style tuners, McCarty II truss rod cover, and a new Mastering Voice Control. The Voice Control is fully variable from clean, clear vintage tones to powerful heavy metal sounds.

The electronics include new McCarty II Treble and Bass pickups with covers, volume and tone control, three-way toggle pickup selector, and a mini-toggle for turning the Voice Control on and off.

The Santana IV is the evolution of the Santana I, II and III models. Carlos Santana and Paul Smith have been working together for more than two years on this new instrument and its new sound. The instrument has most of the appointments of the Santana II and III models but with two major differences. The knobs are now in McCarty positions, and the instrument includes a special Mastering Voice Control. This Voice Control provides an early-1960s sound and clarity to the instrument and turns on and off with a mini-toggle.

PRS is now offering a 300-piece run of a large, full-scale hollowbody guitar. Previously, the SCJ Thinline was only produced in small quantities inside the Private Stock department. This newly offered, limited-run model will feature two different bridge/tailpiece setups, a custom-made Bigsby, as well as a PRS-designed ebony/curly maple unit. The model also features a select grade maple top and back, mahogany middle and neck, and a Macassar ebony fingerboard/headstock veneer with gold mother-of-pearl birds and signature.

Solid alder is once again being used by PRS Guitars with the introduction of the CE 22/24 Alder model. Alder has not been used by PRS since the earlier ‘90s, and the body of this new model, the successor to the CE Mahogany, is made from solid alder without a maple top. The bolt-on neck is hard maple, and both contribute to a unique CE 22/24 Alder tone.

After the success of the PRS Hollowbody series, PRS has extended the line to include the Singlecut Hollowbody. The guitar is offered in two models: the SC Hollowbody Standard and the SC Hollowbody I, both featuring PRS Stoptail bridges and 22-fret necks.

The SC Hollowbody Standard features an all-mahogany body and neck, 25" scale length, 22-fret mahogany wide-fat neck with rosewood fretboard, moon inlays, PRS Stoptail, PRS low-mass locking tuners, Archtop Treble and Bass pickups with covers, volume and tone control, and three-way toggle pickup selector.

The SC Hollowbody I features a maple top with a mahogany back, sides and neck. All other specifications are the same as the SC Hollowbody Standard.

In addition, PRS will unveil four new SE Models at the NAMM Show: the SE Baritone, SE Custom Semi-Hollow Soapbar, the SE Singlecut, and the SE Soapbar.
