Hands-On Review: Yamaha FGX 730SCA Acoustic-Electric Guitar

Hands-On Review: Yamaha FGX 730SCA Acoustic-Electric Guitar
Premium woods and sophisticated electronics

Mike Fitch
Musician’s Friend Staff Writer
Yamaha FGX730SCA FG Series Acoustic-Electric Guitar

One of my first early, memorable encounters with Yamaha acoustic guitars came some years ago when visiting a friend. He pulled out a handsome Yamaha nylon-string classical guitar from its case. “Check this out, man,” my friend enthused—“$100!” He strummed a few Spanish chords for emphasis. The guitar indeed sounded and looked very good, especially for the kind of money that usually would only get you a difficult-to-tune, hard-to-play, toy-like instrument.

This encounter introduced me to what I later found is a cornerstone of Yamaha's reputation—their musical instruments in general, and acoustic guitars in particular, deliver a lot of quality for the money.

The FGX730SCA is the latest in Yamaha’s revamped, value-priced FG Series guitars. This new member of the family will surely turn heads, even among accomplished guitarists, with its solid Sitka spruce top, svelte rosewood back and sides, and integrated electronics. This versatile acoustic-electric hybrid is a natural for acoustic players who want to plug in and rock out when the need arises. And when you do choose to go electric with this guitar, you’ll find some unusually sophisticated tone-shaping controls at your command.
First impressions

Taking the guitar out of the box, I took a moment to check out the solid Sitka spruce top—the sample I played had a beautifully patterned, almost quilted look to it. Sitka spruce has long been a favorite among guitar makers for its strength and strong acoustical qualities. The laminated rosewood back and sides are also luxurious in appearance, seamless and solid looking even on the guitar’s inner surface. Very cleanly executed non-scalloped bracing gives the guitar a lot of strength.

The FGX730SCA is tastefully adorned with white binding on the body, neck, and headplate, accented by cream and black purfling on top. The soundhole is inlaid with abalone in a finely wrought design; and the headstock is inlaid as well. The die-cast chrome tuners turned easily and held tuning well.

The satin-finished neck is slim and fast, with a modified “V” shape that plays easily and feels comfortable to fret. The neck is topped off with a dark rosewood fingerboard with small abalone position-marker dots. The guitar was comfortable to hold and play, its shape cradling easily in the lap, with the cutaway providing easy access up to the 18th fret. The action was suitably low, allowing fast, accurate fretting without string buzz. A tortoiseshell pickguard keeps the body in good shape, running around the whole lower edge of the soundhole to provide scratch protection for a large part of the surface.
Unplugged and plugged

I went into audition mode and put the guitar to the test. Finger-picking a simple bossa nova tune, the sound was extremely clear and robust without being harsh. The spruce top and rosewood body conspire to produce a warm, rich, dynamic sound with strong bass presence, a full midrange, and a well-defined high register. Overall, the instrument was a lot of fun to play; the cutaway shape allowed full access to all the frets, and the neck had a fast, easy feel under the fingers.
The FGX730SCA’s System 55T electronics allow connection to an amp or PA and feature a compact control panel for tweaking your sound with its three-band EQ
The FGX730SCA’s System 55T electronics allow connection to an amp or PA and feature a compact control panel for tweaking your sound with its three-band EQ

The FGX730SCA’s System 55T electronics add a whole other dimension to the instrument’s capabilities, allowing you to plug it into an amplifier or PA system via the 1/4" jack located in the endpin. The preamp’s compact control panel is located on the side of the guitar’s upper bout, letting you tweak the sound to your heart’s content with three-band EQ, including bass, mid, and treble controls. The sound retained its clarity and integrity even at higher volumes, without the harshness sometimes found in piezo pickups.

An additional adjustable mid-frequency (AMF) slider control affects the range from 80Hz to 10kHz, letting you add more mid presence and sculpt the sound more precisely. I found that setting the AMF toward the lower end of its spectrum produced a nice, fat, low-end chunkiness, great for enhancing rhythmic playing styles and fat chords.

A built-in chromatic tuner means that you can leave your standalone tuner at home. A simple touch of a button engages the tuner and lets you easily tune the guitar silently using the visual display. A 9V battery powers both preamp and tuner and fits into an unobtrusive holder on the upper bout near the neck. Inserting a plug into the endpin jack automatically turns on the preamp, while removing the plug turns it off.
Summing it up

At a street price of around $499.99, the FGX730SCA is another example of a Yamaha acoustic guitar delivering a lot of bang for the buck. Yamaha has been making guitars for decades now, and they’ve got the process down cold, continuing to introduce new models at impressively low prices.

With everything you need to take it to the stage as well as the comfort and playability one looks for in an instrument to have around the home, the FGX730SCA is definitely another mark in the win column for Yamaha. It’s a guitar you can wrap your arms around with pleasure while parting with remarkably few of your hard-earned dollars.

Gibson Custom Shop 1968 Les Paul Custom Chambered

Gibson Custom Shop 1968 Les Paul Custom Chambered Electric Guitar Antique Pelham Blue

Gibson Custom Shop 1968 Les Paul Custom Chambered Electric Guitar Antique Pelham Blue

More resonant, lighter version of a classic.

The dual benefits of a lighter body and more resonance are achieved by the craftsmen at the Gibson Custom Shop by strategic placement of the chambers that are routed from the mahogany back. The result is a Les Paul that is not only easier on the shoulders so you can play all night long, but is actually louder, with more sustain.

The guitar's '57 Classic humbuckers output the smoothest, richest tone of any of the Gibson pickups.

the 1968 Les Paul Custom has long been a favorite of players and collectors with its distinctive style and long list of appointments. At top of the list is the soothing Antique Pelham Blue finish that actually looks green because it has been yellowed by the Gibson Custom Shop's antiquing treatment. Add to that the trademark split diamond headstock inlay and lavishly bound body.

Gibson's Custom Shop produces some of the finest electric guitars on earth. Using the best materials money can buy, a staff of skilled luthiers reproduce some of the greatest Gibsons of the past and create stunning new instruments for players and collectors who demand the best.

Have your cake and eat it too
Gibson SJ-200 TV

I’ve always loved classic cars. The blame probably lies with my grandfather and father, both dedicated car nuts. For my money, nothing the vaunted automobile powerhouses in Detroit, Europe, and Japan produce today can touch the vehicles of yesteryear. As a result, I’ve always driven older cars. Sure, they’re a little more work to care for and you don’t have the latest technology at your fingertips, but they’re lots of fun to drive and have tons of character and personality.

When my wife and I started having children a few years ago, my “old” (her description) 1949 Mercury sedan caused a dilemma. To start with, the seat belts in my car didn’t meet modern passenger car safety requirements, especially when it came to baby seats. There was also the issue of climate control. Oh, the heater in my honey worked great, but the air conditioning was nonexistent. I mean, AC wasn’t even a factory option when it was built, you know? It was obvious a newer, safer, more family-friendly vehicle would have to be acquired. One that possessed all the amenities that make modern travel a pleasure—for children and adults.
Gibson saves the day

Recently, Gibson has taken steps to ensure guitarists never have to face a similar dilemma when it comes to their acoustic guitars. The luthiers at Gibson Acoustic in Montana have introduced two new lines of acoustics: the True Vintage series and the Modern Classic models. Each series is made with the utmost care and craftsmanship in the Gibson tradition, but with different goals in mind. The True Vintage acoustics are for die-hard vintage players while the Modern Classic concept updates all of Gibson’s core acoustic models to deliver what today’s players want in an acoustic guitar.

The True Vintage series models are crafted as historic reproductions of some of the guitars that built the Gibson name, with authenticity, character, and accuracy as the guiding principles. The top five acoustic models in Gibson’s celebrated history were chosen and Gibson Montana’s luthiers set out to create exacting replicas of each: the Hummingbird, J-185, J-45, SJ-200, and Southern Jumbo.

The Modern Classics represent an initiative by Gibson to provide performing acoustic guitarists with all the features that make playing a little easier. The complete Modern Classic series is composed of a much larger group of guitars with four or five models in each of Gibson’s main acoustic guitar families: Jumbo, Super Jumbo, Small Bodies, and Round Shoulder and Square Shoulder Dreadnought.

The True Vintage series is a truly drool-inducing lineup of acoustics. Each one was chosen because of its popularity with today’s acoustic players, as well as its lasting heritage as a cornerstone of acoustic music. Able to draw upon a history that few modern manufacturers possess, Gibson Montana set out to make these five models appealingly authentic in both sight and sound. The choice woods and construction methods are where the heart, soul, and sound of each True Vintage model begins. Premium spruce, mahogany, and maple are used, appropriate to the individual model. The soundboard, body, and neck are crafted using tried-and-true techniques like dovetail neck joints and hand-carved braces for powerful dialed-in tone.

The finishing touches for each True Vintage model are found in details that should make any vintage guitar lover’s heart go pitter-pat. Madagascar rosewood is used for the bridge and fingerboard, and the fret ends are bound. A specially formulated amber toner is sprayed over the guitars to give them a dark, aged lacquer finish like a vintage Gibson acoustic. As a demonstration of how far Gibson went to ensure all the appointment details were historically correct, even the pickguards on the Hummingbird and J-200 models are vintage-cast style, made from the original vintage die-cast molds. Finally, each one gets set up with a bone nut and saddle and is detailed with an historically accurate orange label and packed into a vintage-style case. These are the finest Hummingbirds, J-185s, J-45s, SJ-200s, and Southern Jumbos that Gibson Montana has ever produced.
Modern work of art

What does the modern acoustic player want? That’s the question Gibson Montana asked itself in creating the Modern Classic acoustics. The goal of the Gibson Modern Classic is to creat the instrument for the modern player, yet be true to Gibson’s heritage by using a true dovetail neck joint, hand-scalloped bracing, and nitrocellulose lacquer finish on each model. Of course, with the huge stable of Gibson players around the world, they didn’t just query themselves. Player feedback was also considered in settling on those features that would distinguish the Modern Classic guitars. One of the most requested items was a set high-quality acoustic pickup and preamp system. To meet that need, Gibson went to L.R. Baggs for a high-fidelity under-saddle pickup and active transducer system with a volume control that’s tucked away inside the upper rim of the soundhole. It delivers amplified acoustic sound that’s true to your playing and easy to use.

Grover Rotomatic tuners deliver the improved tuning stability that’s appreciated on all-night jam sessions and gigs. The neck of each Modern Classic guitar also receives the new Big Sky treatment, where the edges of the fretboard are radiused for an extremely comfortable feel and enhanced playability. To complement the comfy neck feel, the string height is lowered for faster action. Each one is set up with a bone nut and a Tusq material saddle for the best of vintage and modern performance then slipped into a premium hardshell case built for the rigors of the road. To further distinguish the Modern Classics, each one has a distinct new label. Whether you’re a fan of big-bodied sound from Gibson’s Jumbo and Super Jumbo models; the familiar punchy, warm dreadnought tone; or the intimate responsiveness of one of Gibson’s small-bodied jewels, you’ll find a Modern Classic for you. Whether you love Gibson acoustics old and or new, the True Vintage and Modern Classic series are fantastic guitars.

Tubeway Army: Modeling Magic and Tube Intensity Finally Join Forces

Aaron Suplizio
Product Marketing Manager, Line 6
Line 6 Spider Valve Amps

The new Line 6 Spider Valve™ guitar amplifiers finally resolve the age-old question posed by every guitarist who acknowledges both tube-amp and modeling technology as keys to great tone: Can you have your cake and eat it too? Fortunately for guitarists everywhere, the answer is now a resounding “yes.”

The Spider Valve 112, 212, and HD100 are the world’s first amps to feature an all-tube power section and a dual 12AX7 modeling front-end. What does that mean for guitarists? It means that enlightened tube enthusiasts will never again need to sacrifice the versatility and tonal range provided by Line 6’s advanced amp and effect modeling.

Just as important, modeling mavens who want that same versatility in an onstage tube amp will now find all their favorite vintage amp colors delivered with the performance and response that are the hallmarks of a true all-tube, 6L6 power section and 12AX7 preamp stage. The breakthrough design—which feeds the 6L6 and 12AX7 tubes with a Line 6 modeling “brain”—and its astonishing sound utterly destroy the myth that tubes and modeling are mutually exclusive. If anything, the combination of tube power and modeling flexibility extends and amplifies the virtues of both technologies, allowing each to shine at doing what it truly does best.

Even better, this auspicious marriage of tube-amp guts and digital brainpower comes courtesy of the two parties most responsible for the recent advancements and refinements of both technologies: Reinhold Bogner and Line 6. Reinhold Bogner earned his stateside credibility by repairing and modifying tube amps for the cream of L.A.’s guitar community, which ultimately led to Bogner launching his own high-end amp company, Bogner Amplification. Acclaimed for their rich, robust tones, channel-switching sophistication, and sonic versatility, Bogner amps have earned a maniacally devoted following among discerning guitarists.

What’s more, Spider Valve amps don’t just bear Bogner’s name; they bear his artistic and technical fingerprint on every Sprague® Orange Drop® capacitor and Premium Celestion® Vintage 30 speaker found inside. Bogner’s integral role even included specifying which bolts and washers to use. Meanwhile, the tech gurus at Line 6 have adroitly designed every Spider Valve preamp to benefit from both 12AX7 tubes and a modeling front end. The two work in partnership to augment the tube warmth and presence with a stunning array of modeling options: 12 amp models, providing a palette packed with authentic tone colors inspired by* the ’64 Fender® Deluxe Reverb®, Marshall® Plexi, Mesa/Boogie® Dual Rectifier®, and Vox® AC-30, along with many more outstanding Line 6 creations.

With simple front-end controls and a display, programmable patches and presets are instantly within reach. Tweak your tone even further with the front panel Presence, Drive, Bass, Mid, and Treble controls: this is a true-blue tube amp, and it responds like one, delivering all the analog detail, performance, and warmth of every amp model and effect.

Increasing your timbral options even further, Spider Valve sports seven onboard effects, easily accessible and tweakable via the super-cool SmartControl FX knob, which lets you dial-in varying intensities of effect without the hassle of hardcore programming. You can select up to three simultaneous effects, including Chorus/Flanger, Tremolo, Phaser, Sweep Echo, Tape Echo, Reverb, and Delay.

Spider Valve Amps come in three amp configurations, accommodating both your onstage real estate and your volume needs. Choose among the lean, elegant Spider Valve 112 and 212, with their twin 6L6WGC/5881 40-watt Class AB tube amps and Premium Celestion® Vintage 30 12" speakers (in 1x12 or 2x12 configurations); or consider the handsome and heavyweight Spider Valve HD100 head, with 100 watts provided by four mighty 6L6WGC/5881 tubes, driving a majestic 4x12 Celestion® loaded cab. Each model accommodates Line 6’s FBV2™, FBV Express™, and FBV Shortboard™; foot controllers, features onboard chromatic tuning, tap-tempo, distortion boost, and noise gate, and allows for direct-out POD® recording via XLR.

With its endless versatility and classic warmth and punch, it would be easy to describe Spider Valve as providing “the best of both worlds,” but we prefer to think of it as an entirely new world all its own. Explorers wanted.

Hartke Unveils HyDrive Bass Amp Lineup

Hartke Unveils HyDrive Bass Amp Lineup
Moving beyond the parameters of traditional bass speaker technology, Hartke has introduced a line of bass gear called HyDrive. Three years in development, HyDrive is a brand-new speaker design featuring greater power handling with the fusion of paper and aluminum cones.

Hartke’s HyDrive technology offers the warmth of traditional paper, while incorporating the punch and attack of aluminum. The patented Hybrid Cone Technology uses an outer paper cone for low, deep frequencies and an inner aluminum cone that produces punchy, articulate mids and highs. Using neodymium magnets and a cast aluminum frame, each HyDrive speaker weighs 40% less than a traditional bass speaker, yet handles 250 watts of power for the best power-to-weight ratio of any speaker available... Hands-On Product Review: Peavey Windsor Half Stack

Hands-On Product Review: Peavey Windsor Half Stack
Massive rock tone and crushing volume
By Jimmy Nichols
Peavey Windsor

History is a funny thing. Some people speak of the past with awe in hushed, reverential tones. Others quickly glaze over and fall asleep. It’s just a hunch, but I’ll bet Hartley Peavey was in the latter camp. A self-described "tinkerer," he constantly—almost restlessly—seeks to improve, invent, and create, never settling for what’s already been done. It is in that spirit that the Windsor guitar head and cabinet were commissioned. The neo-Anglo Windsor guitar amp uses modern design and features to deliver a fresh take on the classic sound of English-bred guitar amplifiers.

The Windsor uses a tried-and-true tube brew of three 12AX7s in the preamp and four EL34s in the power amp. It’s a pure all-tube signal path without a hint of solid-state or digital technology to be found. The Windsor even uses old-fashioned transformers hand wound by an elderly gent who’s been doing it that way since hand-wound transformers were new technology. This single-channel circuit delivers 120 raging watts straight to a matching cab loaded with four special-design 12" Peavey speakers. In the realm of guitar amplification, it doesn’t get much more straightforward. But it’s the tweaks Peavey did to this basic tube foundation that really dial in the voice of this well-dressed amp.
Fashion-forward

In a sea of standard-issue chrome-and-black cosmetics, the Windsor sticks out like Nicole Kidman at a biker bar, and that’s a good thing. I love the two-tone black-and-cream color scheme, especially combined with the soft-toned, brushed gold finish of the front panel and name badges. The script font used for the Windsor badge is a classy touch, as is the sweet retro red jewel light that serves as a power indicator. The handle is securely attached, the corners are fitted with protectors, the chassis is heavy-gauge steel, and the vinyl covering is good and thick, so the Windsor should easily last through many years of garage rockin’ and club hoppin’.

The panel features easy-to-read black screen-print labeling. The knobs are black dome units with hexagon-sculpted sides for easy gripping and a simple white dot for level indication. And you’ll quickly notice those knobs go way past 10 or even 11. These babies go all the way to 12 and, believe me, it’s not just a total Spinal Tap gimmick. This is a seriously loud guitar amp. As its designer, John C. Fields, so aptly puts it, "The Windsor’s louder than three hells." So you know it’s about more than just looks.
Peavey Windsor

When you’re ready to plug in, the Windsor gives you two options: one low-gain and one high-gain input. The low-gain input is actually a -6dB padded input, while the high-gain input just puts your signal straight into the cascading gain preamp. The two inputs share volume, 3-band EQ, and a Boost switch in the preamp section, as well as Master Volume, Presence, Resonance, and Texture controls in the output section with the effects loop I/O positioned in-between.

Those latter two controls have never been found on any guitar amplifier produced in England. Both operate post preamp and are original Peavey-patented innovations. I really love the Presence control, because of the high-harmonic emphasis it puts on overdrive tones. The Resonance control is also cool, increasing the natural resonance of the cabinet in the low-end to deliver a bigger bass kick. The Texture knob simulates the reaction of a Class A guitar amplifier by phasing out half of the power tubes and increasing output in the driver tube of the preamp. Together they extend the tonal abilities of the Windsor and make it way more than just a new amp modeled on a classic design.
Tone to burn

Through the low-gain input I was able to dial in a range of deliciously thick crunch and drive sounds that definitely boasted a classic ‘60s Brit flavor and really suited my mini humbucker-equipped solidbody. Even with the Boost switch kicked in, the Windsor remained responsive to my pick attack and changes in the guitar volume—always a good sign. Plugging into the high-gain input with my dual-humbucker axe was like hooking into a hot-headed banshee with the gain to out-scream any vintage British amp I’ve ever heard. Applying the Boost circuit and its EQ-independent midrange jolt gave me an absolutely terrifying sound perfect for ripping leads and pounding riffs. The more volume I fed it, the better it sounded too.

This is definitely an amp made to get out and run. The Windsor likes to be loud and that’s where its true character shows up. Unlike most of the tube amps that have rolled out of Peavey’s doors in years past, the Windsor is not a true metal amp. At its highest gain settings it will inarguably produce some seriously heavy sounds, but it’s not as tight, chunky, or modern-sounding as a 6505 or JSX. It falls somewhere between Peavey’s highly acclaimed and much-loved Classic series amps and the crunch channel on the Triple XXX. You could easily think of it as an evolutionary cousin of the Classic series with some major English mojo. If you’re looking for a rock ’n’ roll head with some vintage vibe that still lets you sound like you, the Windsor should be at the top of your list.

Taylor Custom Electric Guitar Natural Glossy

The Taylor solid body electric guitar has arrived! Featuring original new pickups, a sleek all-aluminum bridge, fresh body design, proprietary neck-to-body construction, and unique switching capabilities. Taylor's innovative imprints are all over the Custom guitar.

For years, Bob Taylor was asked if they were going to build solid body electric guitars, and for years, the answer was no. Bob's thinking was simple: he wasn't going to build a solid body electric unless he felt there was a real reason to. In other words, he wouldn't put the Taylor name on a guitar that was just another version of what already existed.

For this electric guitar to happen, it had to be innovative, unique and worthy of a place alongside the guitars that electric players have loved for generations. When the design group at Taylor invented new pickups and Bob heard them, he knew the time had come. Starting with those pickups, each element of this new solid body was designed from the ground up. The ingenuity that Bob Taylor insisted on resulted in the creation of an electric guitar that's sure to inspire and is well-equipped to impress.
