Buying Guide for Electric Bass Amps

Buying Guide for Electric Bass Amps

Early Bass guitar players didn’t have a lot of choice when it came to amps. They simply plugged into what was available. (Which was pretty much the same stuff that was available for guitar players.) It didn’t take long for everyone to realize that the bass guitar had it’s own special needs when it came to amplification, and that amps designed for guitars were just not going to cut it.

Bass guitar amps require a different design approach than guitar amps. The lower frequencies that need to be reproduced require heavier duty speakers, (often in larger sizes) and lot’s of power.

Deciding what configuration will work for you depends on where you plan on playing. If you’re teaching or you’re a student yourself, a small combo will do the job. Remember, even with a small rehearsal combo, a little more power and a good 10 or 12” inch speaker will deliver the warmer, fuller sound that you expect from a bass. Playing with a live band is a different story.

To play in a band situation with a drummer will require a minimum of 100-watts and a single 15” speaker. Pro bass amps can go as high as 1000-watts. The average power used for pro club act is around 300-watts. It’s important to note that it takes more power to get a speaker to push out bass frequencies than it does to blast the sounds of an electric guitar. For this reason, a 100-watt bass amp is not nearly as loud as a 100-watt guitar amp.

More Info

There are basically three different types of bass amplifiers:

* Tube or Valve amplifiers – The original amps used since the dawn of electric guitars. Tube amps, by the nature of their technology, introduce a warmer, punchier sound that is pleasing to most bassists. More info on Tube amps

* Solid State Amplifiers – Solid-state amps use transistors for their preamp and power section. They require little or no maintenance, are lighter to transport and produce a very clean sound. More info on Solid State amps

* Hybrid Amps – These amps usually combine a solid-state power section with a tube preamp to provide the warmth and “musicality” of tubes with the durability and lightweight of solid-state. There are some manufacturers which combine both tubes and solid-state in the power amp itself. Hybrids have been very effective in bridging the gap between solid-state and tube amplifiers.

Configurations – Bass amps come in a variety of different sizes and two basic configurations:

o Combos – Short for “combination”, combos are amplifiers that combine the speaker and the amplifier in one box. These amps come in two different styles: open back and closed or sealed back. The closed back combo produces more low-end than an open back.

o Separate Amp Head and Speaker Cabinet – The amplifier and speaker cabinet are in two separate cabinets. This allows you to combine different enclosures with different amp heads. You can also add multiple speaker cabinets to an amp head for more volume and coverage. (To avoid damage, this should only be done following the amp manufacturers recommendations) Divided into two separate units, the amplifier is also more convenient to transport.

Deciding what configuration is right for you depends on where you plan on playing. If you’re doing small club dates, teaching or you’re a student yourself, a combo would most likely do the job for you. If you do a lot of outdoor gigs and big rooms and auditoriums, you’ll probably do well with a basic 4x12 (four 12” speakers) cabinet with a separate amp head (known as a Half Stack). Two 4x12 cabinets stacked on top of each other with the head on top is commonly known as a “Full Stack”.

Think carefully about how and where you’ll be using the amp before you make your decision.

Hands-On Product Review: Gibson SG Reissue and Thunderbird Basses

Hands-On Product Review: Gibson SG Reissue and Thunderbird Basses
Two ’60s classics that are still rockin’
By Jerry "Birdman" McCaulley
Gibson SG Reissue and Thunderbird Basses

Gibson has always been more guitar company than bass company. Their basses have mostly been offshoots of guitar designs. Nevertheless, all have been excellent instruments, well made and unique in character. Two of them are extra special—the SG Bass and the Thunderbird—two rock legends from the ’60s that have stood the test of time. I personally have a special fondness for both basses. The SG was my first proper bass, the instrument I learned on. The Thunderbird was my step-up bass and remains my favorite to this day.

The SG Reissue

The SG bass was introduced in the early ’60s as the EB (electric bass) Series. Rockers took to it immediately and when Jack Bruce played it with Cream it gained serious rock cred. Between ’59 and the mid-’60s the SGs went through a number of changes: short scale, long scale; one pickup, two pickups; three knobs, four knobs. There was even a model that came with a fuzz tone circuit and a six-string model. The consistent feature was the SG body shape.

The SG Reissue is the quintessential ’60s short-scale version, combining the best features from the early days: solid mahogany body, set mahogany neck, two pickups, and three controls. The Vintage models had a neck pickup that tended to be muddy. Gibson has solved this problem by redesigning the pickup, thus clearing its voice, and they added a newly designed bridge pickup as well. The Reissue also has the three-knob setup—a volume/volume/tone, instead of the four-knob guitar-type configuration. It’s simple and makes more sense for bass than four knobs.

I opened the case to find a bass that looked pretty much the same as the one I used to own, with the same Heritage Cherry finish. On close inspection, I found the craftsmanship to be flawless. It seemed better to me than I, at least, remembered the vintage model to be. After 40 some years of making the SG Bass, Gibson has perfected the process. One obvious improvement is the hardware. The bridge is heftier and more adjustable than on the vintage SG, and the Shamrock tuners are smoother and more precise.

The neck, as on the SG guitar, is thin and hand-friendly; and the short scale, once you get adjusted to it, plays fast. Of course, the SG body shape has icon appeal, but it is also compact and sculpted from solid, dense mahogany that resonates well. The SG shape works well for bass—it's balanced better than the Les Paul model; and the set neck enhances sustain.

Tonally, it’s an excellent bass for rock. You can dial up the bridge pickup for a grind sound, or use a little of it to add definition to a full, round tone. And with the highs trimmed back and the neck pickup dialed up, it has a buttery smooth sound that is very usable for many kinds of music. All in all, I’d say Gibson should keep reissuing the SG. It has major charms.
The Bird is the word

The Thunderbird is not only among the most distinctive-looking basses ever made, it is also one of the best-playing basses ever. It was the bass I graduated to from the SG. I was a Gibson guy. I was hankering to move to a 34"-scale bass, and the Thunderbird IV had a look I liked. At the time, I didn’t even realize what an exceptional bass it was, but as I improved as a player, my appreciation for the Thunderbird grew.

The current Thunderbird IV is pretty much the same as the ’60s version—the same laminated, thru-body neck; mahogany wings; leaning-back body shape; and the hooked headstock that has sort of a Seattle Seahawks thing. It was a radical look in the ’60s and is still radical today. It’s a look that hard rockers and metal maniacs find fits their style, and it is a bass capable of pounding out the heaviest and loudest music.

For me, it isn’t its look that distinguishes the Thunderbird. What matters is its incredible tone and playing feel. It has amazing sustain and a clean, clear tone from the bottom of the fretboard to the top. These can be attributed mostly to its neck-thru construction, but it is really the whole package. The spacing of the two humbuckers, the combination of neck woods, the size of the mahogany wings, its balance—all of these features combine in a bass that can do it all.

From slap to funk, from heavy, grinding metal to the most articulate fusion, the Thunderbird is a bass that sounds fantastic no matter what the musical style. It is also an extremely comfortable instrument. It is perfectly balanced which makes it rest lighter on the shoulder. The two soapbar-style pickups give you comfortable thumb positions forward and back, and the neck is relatively narrow and fast fretting.
Oldies but goodies

Both the SG Reissue and the Thunderbird are bass classics that deserve to be honored for their histories and their unique virtues. If you haven’t had a chance, you should look for the opportunity to give both of them a try. They’re great basses.

U.S. Special Highway 1™ Strat

U.S. Special Highway 1™ Strat®
Fender®'s new stripped-down, high-octane hot rod
by Mikey Lank

Champagne taste on a beer budget seems to be an unavoidable result of the musical life. If you've spent your best years honing your chops rather than banking the bucks-as so many of us have-chances are you have a very developed ear and a wanting wallet. While there are plenty of cheap Asian guitars on the market, the vast majority sound like cheap Asian guitars. They just can't seem to nail that inimitable American vibe your ears have learned to love. Now Fender®'s making an all-American honey that won't require a mortgage.

Bring it on home
I really dig Fender®, always have. At the dawn of the electric guitar, when everybody else was making expensive archtop electrics, Fender® came out with a production-line solidbody that was in reach for most serious players. They've always known their market-guys like us who, to put it bluntly, ain't rich.

This new U.S. Special Highway 1™ Strat® speaks directly to our kind by delivering all the manufacturing expertise, attention to detail, and general cool vibe I've found on all the American-made Fender®s for a price way below any of the others.

A lighter touch
When I strapped this baby on, it seemed to spring to life in my hands. One of the ways Fender® kept the price down was by applying a lighter paint job with a genuine lacquer finish rather than thick gloss. I think it actually makes the alder body breathe easier and resonate more freely. It's no huge secret that a lighter finish can enhance resonance; Fender®'s Custom Shop regularly produces special-ordered guitars with lacquer finishes.

The Highway 1™ colors are sharp-looking and unique. And Fender® says they'll age gracefully; the lacquer finish means they should reflect all of your time playing and develop that comfortable, played-in look a lot quicker. (Of course, the finishes are not as tough and are subject to the frailties of any lacquer finish.)

Six points of contact
Another money-saving strategy might also have resulted in a more resonant guitar. Rather than the two-point vibrato system found on recent Strat®s, this one reverts to the original six-pin design found on the originals.

U.S. Special Highway 1™ Strat®
Admittedly, it's not as slick a system and is a bit less stable for dive-bombers, but that increased contact between string and wood afforded by six screws directly into the top actually seems to enhance the guitar's overall resonance and lively feel. I think the six-point bridge is one of the many subtle features that created that world-famous tone of vintage Strat®s.

Necks to Godliness
The most radical departure of the Highway 1™ guitar from a vintage Strat® is the neck, which is essentially the same as any modern American Standard neck. Since this design has been developed through decades of trial, error, and innovation, Fender® wisely decided to include it on its new hot rod.

The Highway 1™ neck feels the same as the one on my 2000 American Strat®. I prefer it to the necks on any of my vintage Strat®s because it reaches a happy balance between substantiality, comfort, and stability. The 22-fret fingerboard really shows off the precision craftsmanship coming out of Fender®'s Corona, California, plant. I like the medium-jumbo frets because they make it easier to fret the notes cleanly than do the narrower vintage frets. The sealed, cast tuners provide stable and smooth tuning.

Pickup lines
Playing vintage Fender® Strat® pickups, Hendrix, Clapton, and Stevie Ray laid the foundations for modern rock guitar. If they were good enough for the greats, they're definitely good enough for me. Practically speaking, the three staggered pole piece, alnico magnet, single-coil pickups on this Strat® are the exact same thing the heroes played. While it has a modern-feeling neck and plays like "butta'," when I plugged it in the U.S. Special Strat®screamed out vintage tone so pure I thought I was in a time warp.

Yeah, the single coils are noisier than, say, Fender®'s Vintage Noiseless pickups, but they absolutely do what they're meant to-they crank out big, bold, edgy, and sweet tone. I had no trouble generating everything from lowdown, sweaty Texas blues to soaring stadium anthems. Unequivocally, these pickups produce the kind of serious tone I've learned to expect from American-made Strat®s.

Soft protection
Your typical American Strat® comes with a nice hardshell case. But if you're like me you never use those bulky things unless you're traveling. Fender® figured most players have the same attitude and replaced the hardshell case with an included Fender
